Was Search Engine Optimization Created By Google?

Generally speaking, the search engines tend to get a little bit bent out of shape when they think about all the SEO’s out there trying to game their algorithms. Too many companies, search engine optimization is what they do for a living, and how they put food on the table. But, for the search engines, it’s simply a manipulation of the search results they present to their visitors. Now, painting all SEO’s with the same brush is not really painting a true picture of the SEO landscape. But you have to wonder, if Google, Bing, and Yahoo haven’t in reality become the victims of their own success.

While it’s true, that they don’t divulge their algorithmic secrets, there are many widely accepted principals that will get a site to rank higher in the search engines. The two big ones are of course back links and good content. From a personal perspective, I’m all for good content. There is nothing I enjoy more, then finding a new website that has tons of useful information relevant to what it is I’m interested in. Then again on the flip side, there’s nothing I hate more than coming across a site with absolutely nothing of value to me. Now chances are that site landed high in the ranking either because it’s been around forever, or it has a lot of links point to it. And it doesn’t have anything to do with the content on the page. In my mind, ranking a site based on links is a flawed approach. It’s far too easy to game. The search engines do it, because it makes their life easier. Their code, simply isn’t sophisticated enough to figure out if a web page is good for me based simply on the content of the page. Looking at back links gives them clues to make their lives easier. Until the day, when search engines get smart enough to disregard back links then SEO will always be a viable business.
