The 3D phenomenon has been around for a little while, but now the handheld and portable 3D scanners are becoming more and more popular. The varieties and pricing is spread across vast ranges. Some of the scanners are $7,000 and others range in the tens of thousands. It depends on whether it is for a small company, personal use or a big production company.

Different Options of 3D Scanners

There are handheld portable scanners and scanners that are attached to swing arm devices. Many production studios, movie studios and schools use these scanners. The scanner basically captures the dimensions of real world objects, the shape, color appearance etc. and these scanners can be hooked up to a computer or a camera and the image can be brought to life. Here area few samples of some of the scanners on the market today:

- Portable Z Scanners- these are the top of the line industry scanners, they are used for big production projects, are affordable, plug ad play devices. They offer fast and accurate capture of any object from any angle. The cost on this scanner is about $28,000.

- Konica Minolta Range5 Scanner- Another excellent model, this scanner offers dark surface mode functions that allow objects to be measured with low reflectance and it does not require a dark room to develop these images. It is environmentally aware; there is no need for pre or post measuring surface spraying to achieve a specific shot. It has a 1.31 million pixel sensor and 2 second scanning with a 3d preview function. It scans dead angles, area depths and surface conditions. This model cost about $7,000.

- Escan/Optix400- these 3d scanners offer pattern regeneration, rapid photo typing and can connect to any digital camera. It is compact and accommodates interchangeable heads. It has a field depth of up to 36” and a resolution of 170 microns @ 300mm. The cost is around $7,500.

Many 3D Scanners are made for big productions and school projects but the smaller cheaper models are available for performances and projection needs. These are not as good at scanning objects they are more for effect than performance. The above scanners are a little on the expensive side but the prices are coming down and they are becoming more and more accessible to the small company and individual. Check the specifications on your computer and digital camera to make sure everything is compatible with the scanner.
